Case against Virat Kohli’s pub in Bengaluru for lacking designated smoking zone

-

Virat Kohli’s Bengaluru-based pub, One8 Commune, is under legal scrutiny following a suo motu case filed by the Cubbon Park Police for violating the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). The establishment reportedly lacks a designated smoking area, contravening public health regulations aimed at controlling tobacco use in public spaces .

This incident adds to a series of regulatory challenges faced by the pub since its inauguration in December 2023. Previously, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) issued notices citing fire safety violations, including the absence of a mandatory No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Fire Department. Despite an earlier notice issued on November 29, 2024, the pub failed to respond, prompting the BBMP to issue a second notice with a seven-day deadline for compliance .

Additionally, in July 2024, the establishment was found operating beyond the permissible hours, remaining open past 1 a.m., which led to an FIR being registered against the pub’s manager under the Karnataka Police Act .

These repeated infractions have raised concerns among civic authorities and the public regarding adherence to safety and health regulations in high-rise establishments. The BBMP has warned of legal action if the pub fails to address the cited violations within the stipulated timeframe.

As of now, there has been no official response from Virat Kohli or the management of One8 Commune regarding these allegations. The situation underscores the importance of compliance with public safety norms, especially in establishments frequented by large crowds.
